Every tire meets Canadian safety standards
Under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act, every tire sold in Canada must meet Transport Canada's minimum safety standards. If a defect is found, Transport Canada can require the manufacturer to issue a recall.
Winter tires: look for the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol on the sidewall. To use it, a manufacturer has to certify that the tire passed a snow traction test showing at least 10% better grip on packed snow than a standard reference tire. That's what makes it a real winter tire and not just an all-season with a snowflake sticker.

Budget brands, real ratings
Most passenger tires have three government grades moulded into the sidewall, called UTQG:
- Treadwear (for example 400): how fast the tread wears compared to a test tire. Higher usually means it lasts longer.
- Traction (AA, A, B, C): how well the tire stops on wet pavement. AA is the top grade.
- Temperature (A, B, C): how well the tire handles heat at speed. A is the top grade.
Lower-priced brands often score just as well as, or better than, tires that cost a lot more. Here's how a few compare:
| Tire | Treadwear | Traction (wet) | Temperature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kapsen ComfortMax AS H202 | 440 | AA | A |
| Ovation VI-388 | 280 | AA | A |
| Minerva F205 | 320 | A | A |
| Nexen N'Fera Supreme (name-brand comparison) | 600 | A | A |
Grades can vary by size, so always check the sidewall or product page for your exact tire. Winter tires usually don't carry UTQG grades. For winter tires, the snowflake symbol is what counts. Learn more about UTQG from NHTSA.
